Stevens Pass Railroad History Tour
This popular auto tour, cosponsored by the Upper Valley Museum and Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center, is led by WVMCC curator and railroad historian Mark Behler. Identical tours will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, August 28-29. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at UVM; view artifacts from Wellington Disaster, hear overview of Great Northern Railway history, and form carpools to drive to five sites along U.S. Highway 2 of historical significance. The highlight of the tour is the final stop near the summit of Stevens Pass, where the Wellington Disaster occurred 100 years ago. North America's deadliest avalanche swept 2 trains off the track, killing 96 people. Bring water and a lunch, and wear walking shoes for a half-mile hike to the Wellington site. Please bring a Forest Pass or Golden Access Card if you have one, for parking at Wellington. Additional hiking on the Iron Goat Trail is optional. Pre-register by calling 548-0728.
