DESCRIPTION:This popular auto tour\, cosponsored by the Upper Valley Museum and Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center\, is led by WVMCC curator and railroad historian Mark Behler. Identical tours will be offered on Saturday and Sunday\, August 28-29. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at UVM\; view artifacts from Wellington Disaster\, hear overview of Great Northern Railway history\, and form carpools to drive to five sites along U.S. Highway 2 of historical significance. The highlight of the tour is the final stop near the summit of Stevens Pass\, where the Wellington Disaster occurred 100 years ago. North America's deadliest avalanche swept 2 trains off the track\, killing 96 people. Bring water and a lunch\, and wear walking shoes for a half-mile hike to the Wellington site. Please bring a Forest Pass or Golden Access Card if you have one\, for parking at Wellington. Additional hiking on the Iron Goat Trail is optional. Pre-register by calling 548-0728.
